So why a blog?

C and I have been designing this house for several years now (around that thing called ‘real life’), and it’s been a real struggle to find specific information that’s

  • Current
  • Relevant┬áto New Zealand building code
  • Has decent-quality images of design ideas/products in real-world usages

We’ve had a pretty specific vision for this build for some time (more on that later), so the ‘mission statement’ for this blog is to provide a concise repository of content around what/why and how we did things, and to spark some debate on the various approaches.

We don’t claim to have all the answers, and we certainly don’t have a limitless budget (far from it!), so there will doubtlessly be compromise and tough decisions to be taken along the way.

The Beginning. . .

Every story has to start somewhere, and ours began one windy April afternoon a few years ago, when we made the biggest impulse purchase ever, and did a handshake deal on an 842 m2 corner section before the subdivision went public that weekend.

Co-incidentally, C and I were in the process of planning our wedding, so my architect-sister came up with the notion of designing our house as her wedding present to us.

Fast-forward a few years, a baby and a house sale, and we’re ready to kick off!!
